A few years ago, the Crypton Corporation began producing and marketing a series of pop idol androids. Managed within the corporation, these 'Vocaloids' wish only to deliver music to the humans of Earth with their distinctive voices. The Vocaloids have since become very popular in the entertainment industry, netting much money and prestige to Crypton.
An act of corporate espionage, however, resulted in the proprietary DIVA System's schematics being released on the internet. It was traced and brought down within a week, but the damage had already been done: Crypton soon became embroiled in lawsuits with other companies that attempted to duplicate the popular Vocaloid designs, crushing the opposition and adopting any completed units as their own.
