Profile:
Once a young waif who was found wandering alone, within in the blustery wastes of Narshe's collieries… nowadays — in the Multiverse — an altruistic young woman who runs a small, rustic inn within the realm of Lost Islands. There, in this remote place, she is able to offer some bastion of accomodation and care to travellers. Nythius is a half-Esper; one whose true existence is hazy, but whose life as-a-whole has been fruitful. Having grown up in Narshe under the care of a older, widowed woman, Nythius later weathered much of the war and sought, mainly, to keep to her own devices… and do the best she could to assist those who suffered from the conflict between the Confederacy, and the Union. To this day, Nythius continues to do exactly that, offering comfort and protection, when she can. While Nythius is versed in a repertoire Shadow and Ice magic, one must never discount the patience and goodness of her heart.

Major Recurring NPCs and Past Presences

  • Delilah Barasque - A no-nonsense, hard-working woman of fifty-nine years, and widow whose husband was killed when a mining shaft collapsed, in Narshe. She is also the woman who essentially raised Nythius. She, too, has been spirited into the Multiverse and she currently resides in the realm of the Lost Islands. A most unlikely home, with ruins and the like. However, some civilization exists in pockets, and Delilah maintains the homestead/inn that she and Nythius painstakingly refurbished. She rarely travels, relying instead upon Nythius to provide provisions and travel to procure them. With the aide of Fiell (listed below), she keeps the establishment in immaculate upkeep. Nythius is very close to and protective of Delilah, and she loves the woman beyond all measure. A complete mother-daughter relationship. (ACTIVE)
  • Fiell - A young Hylian woman who came into the realm of the Lost Islands confused, injured, emaciated, and fairly amnesiac. Not a nice cocktail. It took both Nythius and Delilah much time to nurture her and treat the wounds that made her so sorry a sight. Since that terrible day, Fiell has recovered well and has returned to full health, but her mind remains filled with shadows. The nature of her arrival — the cause of so much trauma — remains a complete oddity. Fiell enjoys taking part in the running of the inn, having become another daughterly presence for Delilah, and in turn a quasi-sister to Nythius. Fiell is a sweet girl of sixteen years, but is also profoundly innocent and sensitive. An apititude for sewing has since emerged from the mystery that is her mind, and past. As she is with Delilah, Nythius is very protective of the girl. Perhaps even moreso. (ACTIVE)
  • Fenrir - The Esper half of Nythius's parentage. A reclusive creature who, in a human guise, had an encounter with a human woman. Initially unexpected, Fenrir's lover was woman who he loved fiercely and briefly, due to circumstances beyond control. The brevity was caused by the sad occurance of the woman's death, during childbirth. Hardened and guilty, Fenrir raised Nythius up until the age of three, and left the girl to be adopted into the mining town of Narshe. Nythius remembers little of her father aside from the vision of a wolf, and his tenacious way of defending her. He has not been witnessed by Nythius since. ('Fenrir' is the copyrighted property of Square Enix.)
  • Cassandra - Surname unknown. Nythius's deceased mother, whom she has never known and unfortunately, never will. Not unless she encounters her father, and that is just about as unlikely! Cassandra was a resident of Narshe; an adventurous woman who often caught wanderlust and enjoyed exploring the frigid wastes that stretched out beyond the town. Deemed both trecherous and beautiful. While often prepared for it, one day in particular led Cassandra to nearly lose her life after setting foot onto an unsafe rockface. Fenrir, sensing the dark emotions of the woman's terror — tinged distinctly with the hopelessness of impending death — happened upon her as she cowered, and rescued her. Beyond that moment, the two became infatuated, and later produced Nythius — much to Fenrir's shock and Cassandra's joy. She carried her baby well, up until the later stages of development, but the delivery proved to be too much for her. Already weakened by the months of carrying the halfling infant, Cassandra passed away from bloodloss and duress after the delivery.

Abilities

(ALL ARE CONSENT-BASED! You, as a fellow player, needn't feel inclined to 'go with' the effects of these powers — especially the magic-based ones — if you do not wish to.)

  • Elemental Magic: Shadow - Of the two elements that Nythius practices, that of Shadow/Darkness happens to be her primary bearing. She can effectively strike forth with this element and especially harm those who, by inverse, use Light/Holy magic. Temporary blindness, 'dark burn', superficial poisoning and sleep-effects are some resulting conditions from this element… not to mention that it can be just plain creepy to watch. Many of these repercussions, when cast angrily, result in a deep, burning pain. This does not categorize her as evil, as it is only the base element that was instilled into her from the Esper half of her parentage. While Nythius has no set 'name' for many of these spells, the nature of their usage can be categorized by Nythius's mood at the time. When angry, the magic takes on a decidedly angular, malicious look; vast, pitch and formidable. Simply put… resembling the evilness that is so often accustomed to it. Sadness makes the effects rather dense and languorious, resulting in side-effects of lethargy, and melancholy. Happiness/contentment? Oxymoron that may be, but the magic therefore becomes softened, and restful.. most often resulting in a 'sleepy' quality.
  • Elemental Magic: Ice - Nythius' secondary elemental preference is that of Ice, or that of a cold bearing. She is capable of using frigid spells to her favor. (Ie. Draw from the 'Blizzard/ara/aga' tier of spells, the ability to impose 'frigid conditions' into a certain radius, or 'drop' the temperature superficially.)
  • Sleeptouch - Harmless. A byproduct of Nythius' Shadow magic, made malleable to this innocuous use. Using dark energies, she is able to cast a lull upon a target and put them into a restful sleep, from which they awaken at their own pace. While in that state — to the player's discretion — a target is prone to a profoundly deep sleep and particularly vibrant dreams.
  • Morph - During heightened emotional states, or sheer need, Nythius is able to morph into her Esper form. By doing this, her attributes of speed and magic attack are profoundly heightened. On the flipside, she loses her opposable thumbs and the versatility of a human form.. and, it is not a lengthy transformation. After an extended period in this form — and especially by casting magic, during — she is left exhausted… even confused.
  • Flight - Granted wings in both forms, Nythius is capable of flight. She is very protective of her wings, and dreads any damage being dealt to them. She can only fly as fast as her wingbeats shall take her; she is not capable of super-fast flight.
  • Empathy - While not an aggressive power per say, it is worth mentioning that Nythius is profoundly attuned to the emotions of others… and in turn, will sometimes even feel their sadness, happiness or anger if the emotion is strong enough.
  • Dark Gate - Conjuring forth a burst of magic, Nythius is able to produce a small porthole of dark magic through which she can disappear. Not completely, but by achieving the effects of a small teleportation spell. The range extends ONLY to the equivalent of a street-block away. Due to her weaker physical constitution in battle, this is a technique for (trying) to dodge vast, violent attacks or situations that could easily throttle her. — (ie. She's doesn't teleport away when she's up against a fistfight, for example. But really, does she seem the type to go out and try to punch someone out? ^^; )

Skills

  • Spellcasting - Nythius is a magical being and therefore, is heavily reliant upon magic use. She is able to use the previously listed abilities fluently and silently; she needn't chant audibly. To compliment this nature, her mana/'MP' reserves are substancial.

Flaws

  • Fire Magic - Simply put, with Cold/Ice as her secondary element, Nythius receives double the damage from a Fire elemental spell/attack. If the attack is weapon-based — with an enchantment of Fire — she then receives the blow from the weapon, whatever it's force may be… and the double Fire damage, on top. Frickin' OW. As an afterthought, she is uncomfortable in warm places… but she isn't harmed by it.
  • Physical Combat - Being slight of build and immensely reliant upon magic, Nythius suffers from a weakness for heavy melee. Not that she is a fragile creature, who will break at the slightest violent touch… but she's not about to get up with a smile on her face from a solid swat of a large blade, or a big knuckly punch. While she has means for avoiding melee — wits, speed and agility — Nythius can STILL be caught if her foe is swift enough, and she suffers dearly from it. She can utilise daggers, polearms and other smaller weapons.. but broadswords, axes, firearms and the like are out.
  • Mental: Loneliness, Awkwardness - While approachable and very happy to accept company, Nythius can easily become lonesome when she is without contact with others for a very long time. She does not drip angst, and can be quite pleasant when she is spending time with someone…. well, should the situation warrant it. Her fear stems from the common basis of other half-Espers: Are people afraid of me? Is something wrong with me? Nythius, while prone to these bits of worry, does not go around with her head down, however. She is comfortable in her own skin… but if someone reacts to her parentage violently… even /she/ can falter. In short, Nythius enjoys company, and very readily misses it when she is alone for a long time. Perhaps this is a throwback to her lupine esper form, and how those canine instincts give her a mild sort of pack mentality.
  • Holy/Light Magic - No, she won't be burned alive if she steps out in sunlight.. nor will she be instantly killed by a spell of this elemental nature. Rather, Nythius receives substantial damage from this element that is capable of rendering her stark unconscious, even. Cure/Cura/Curaga is also ineffective for her, with the curative aspects being negated and pain being ushered forth instead. She receives no wounds, burns or the like.. But, simply put, FEELS as if she is being burnt. Nythius shall only find curative relief through a Dark elemental spell, Ice magic or curative potions.
  • Fault: Structural change, Esper Form - Some of the mobility that Nythius has in her human form, it is compromised in her Esper form. While she physically gains speed and dexterity in this form, she in turn loses the use of opposable thumbs and cannot grasp (and use) tools — save for grasping something in her jaws.. but what good is that, when it comes to tools/weapons.. etc? Sometimes four legs can be much more awkward, than two!
  • Instability - In places where magic/mana levels are high and especially raw/uncontrolled, Nythius is prone to becoming TOO attuned to them, and therefore unstable. Her body tries to synche with, and absorb, too much energy at once. This could result in her falling 'ill', in a way.. in the form of confusion, a pounding headache, dizziness. Or, if ESPECIALLY acute — ie. if she's in Esper form and ESPECIALLY susceptible — Nythius can become wild, and capable of losing some control over herself.
  • Apesh—t! - Nythius IS half-Esper. So, when that Esper half hears the 'call to battle' that full-blooded Espers may make.. what does it do? Why, it responds! What results is an instantaneous Morph for Nythius — whether she wants to or not — and she takes to the skies to seek out and join her brethren to rectify a problem, or blow it to smithereens. (Example: Ingame FF6, when the Espers razed Vector.)

History

(OOC: Espers, Empire and Narshe are © Squaresoft.)

The evening fell as expected upon Narshe, in the World of Balance. Tensions were high, yet curbed by the sort of apathy within the mining town… secretly, a stronghold for the Returners. The town had not yet become aware of the frozen esper in the mountains whose discovery, some years later, would send the world as the denizens knew it into a whirlwind..

The Empire knew little. They had their own matters to tend to; their own secretive, powerful projects. Tritoch continued to sleep his dark, frozen slumber. But there was one more story to follow. Minor in the grand scheme of things, but for a handful of denizens within the snowy town… one they would not soon forget.

It all started when a little girl, with tresses dark as night, plodded her way through the snow and happened upon the mouth of a mineshaft. Those within, doing their duty, were startled to see that this fey child was hardly bothered by the cold — her fingertips were not even blue! Nor did the dark of night scare her; the only reason behind the fear in her eyes was that of loneliness. So when the small group of burly Narshe miners found the little girl, they were surprised to see how she clambered to them… despite their stance as complete strangers. it was sheer wonder, as to why this child was in this dreary place; why she approached them clad in only a raggedy overcoat — much too big for her — and the shine of warm life upon her face in so frigid a climate.

There was little time to wonder, for as quickly as they found her, one of the miners took the child into Narshe to see to her recovery. There was nothing to recover FROM, in fact; little Nythius remained jubilant to simply have contact… a warm meal and the soft light of a lantern meant little to her otherwise. The questions — burgeoning at first — were fated to die down in coming days as this peculiar child was eventually accepted, much to her obvious pleasure. It was as if she couldn't get enough of human contact, no matter how brief.

Nythius was entrusted into the care of a widowed 37-year-old woman, whose husband was killed in an accident, when the mineshaft in which he was working caved in. Unable to bear children, the middle-aged, kindly housewife took to Nythius in a heartbeat. For she was as desperate for love as Nythius was, for companionship. From thereon, Nythius' origins were no longer disputed as she and Delilah became pseudo-mother and daughter.

The sweet child, as she grew, began to exhibit strange physical changes. Unbeknownst to the townfolk, she was a half-Esper; the lovechild between the esper Fenrir and an ill-fated young woman — known as Cassandra —- who would not survive the childbirth. While the lupine Esper did the best he could to care for the child, Fenrir would later consider his own transient nature and his inability to properly raise a little girl. Also, the reminder of her mother — whom he loved strongly, yet briefly — was too strong, in some of the child's features. So in her third summer, the Esper left his child in the snowy climes of Narshe… knowing her affinity to Ice would protect her, and knowing precisely where to leave her so that she would find her way to that fated mineshaft. Fenrir knew it all… and the rest was history.

So back to the present, at the time… Nythius knew she was changing; she had vague memories of her strange arrival into the world… and as a wise adolescent, she knew that she was different. To prevent scaring those she loved, she sought to mask her differences well; hide the wings that she began to sprout, with magic… and tie back the dark tresses that she had grown. Other bits and pieces of her appearance were hidden well, and the young woman — for awhile — managed to perform her ruse well. It was easy to blend in, as the world at large began to alter and become a dangerous place. People, from all townships and kingdoms, were too busy fighting for their lives and freedom against the growing power of the Empire. Too busy to notice a girl with flourishing aptitude in the arcane, and unorthodox genetics. The World of Balance plummeted into the calamity known as the World of Ruin and still, Nythius and Delilah survived. The world, as they knew it, became a much scarier place…

When Nythius began to reach a benchmark in her growth and powers — and subsequently a harder task in hiding them — that was when the Custodians sought to toss her into the Multiverse. It was a rough transition, needless-to-say; Nythius was torn from the widow who essentially came to become her mother… and also, she hadn't found her true father. While those ambitions were important to her in the past, Nythius found that she had to move on a bit so she could survive, to see her future. Alone, without much of an inkling of her past life, Nythius wandered helplessly until she was found by representatives of the Union. Through this miracle, she found a foothold for this new life; serving the faction with dedication as a civilian, but also living her own life with an inate need to protect, and care for others less fortunate.
